Steve Jobs once said that the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Even if your job may be demanding and challenging at times, you should still enjoy doing it to be successful. If you get up each morning thinking about the excitement of the new day, filled with opportunities, challenges and successes, you are experiencing joy at work.

According to an article published by the University of Southern California, being happy at work and loving what you do is an overall productivity booster and enhances performance. The article states that people who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be optimistic and motivated, learn faster, make fewer mistakes, and take better business decisions.

To experience complete joy in your job you must acknowledge that your life and your work are gifts from the Lord that you should cherish and enjoy. According to Steve Errey, Confidence Coach, it is easy to get caught up in routine. “Initially, when the work is new you are excited, but if you don’t look for the challenges in every day you can get into a rut, which drains the joy out of every workday.”

Follow these three tips to find joy in your job:

  1. Develop a social circle

You will experience more joy at work if you surround yourself with colleagues who also have a positive outlook on life. Engage with these colleagues, chat to them and share your problems and challenges. If you are struggling or have lost perspective, they will help you.

  1. Look out for opportunities to grow instead of focusing on failure

It is important to protect yourself in the workplace, but guard against being overprotective and sceptical about new opportunities. This will prevent you from enjoying the benefits such opportunities can offer. Always look for new opportunities, seize them and make the best of every situation.

  1. Have the courage to speak up

It is very difficult to feel any kind of joy, pleasure or even satisfaction when you’re run down, uninspired and unmotivated. According to Errey, you should never be too afraid to speak up. If your job is boring or not enjoyable, speak to your manager. He or she will not know how you feel unless you tell them. Laying your cards on the table could open many doors for you and enable you to discover new things about yourself.

Life is too short not to experience joy in your work, so be conscious of the benefits you are creating for yourself and think positively. Once you have chosen to apply an encouraging mindset, your work will become more enjoyable and easier to master on the road to success.
